It looks like we may have to wait a little longer for that Tupac biopic, but we doubt anyone would complain given its reasoning. Director John Singleton—who casted ‘Pac for his 1993 film, “Poetic Justice”—is putting the biopic on hold indefinitely until he feels its just right. He has the blessing from the family and even has a script, but given his closeness and personal connection to Tupac Shakur, he doesn’t want the piece to be “just another biopic.”
“What he stood for is far beyond the music he made,” he said of the slain rapper in a recent XXL interview. Fans loved ‘Pac for his genuine spirit and his “Thug Life” lifestyle, which later became a mantra for people to live how they saw fit. He was an example of speaking your mind, standing up for what you believe in and doing it on your own terms.
During a 1996 drive-by, Pac was shot and killed by a still unknown gunman on the streets of Las Vegas. Since then, Pac’s lyrics, poetry, and music have traveled through the generations. His words have been dissected and studied in college classrooms, making him one of the few rappers to have such profound work that it needed to be understood and comprehended under a microscope. They’ve also been the inspiration behind a Broadway musical, Holler If Ya Hear Me, and many books that he have never been seen or heard.
Tupac Shakur’s legacy is much more than just hip-hop culture. A biopic on his life and impact on the world would have to be done correctly, so it’s good to know that Singleton’s approach is “to do this film exactly right or not do it at all.”
